about the show

Abandoned on a dying station in the farthest reaches of known space, a young scientist fights for survival (and patience with the on-board A.I.). Who is she? No one knows. But a lot of dangerous folks really, really want to find out…

Season One Trailer:

What Is Girl In Space?

Girl In Space is a multiple award-winning sci-fi mystery audio drama created by Sarah Rhea Werner that follows the story of a young scientist on board an abandoned space station through her stream-of-conscious audio diaries.

Season One begins with a narrow focus on just the main character, and gradually opens up to feature a full cast. It includes 13 full episodes that range between 26 - 40 minutes each, with an hour-long finale.

Girl In Space is currently free to listen to and supported by listeners like you via Patreon and Ko-Fi (and by whatever money Sarah happens to have in her bank account.) You can support the show by purchasing merch via our TeePublic Merch Store as well.

Will I Like Girl In Space?

I mean, I hope you’ll like it, though of course there are no guarantees. The tone of Girl In Space is warm, intriguing, imaginative, and introspective, and largely set by the narrator — a smart, snarky yet kind-hearted female character with a fiercely independent and optimistic mind.

Themes include freedom, humanity, truth, loneliness, beauty, individuality, capitalism, inner turmoil, personal growth, and delicious cheeses.

If you're a fan of Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Star Trek, Star WarsMass Effect, or books such as Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries or the Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman, you may enjoy Girl In Space.

Are Full episode Transcripts Available?

Yes! Full transcripts are available for free in the show notes for each episode.

Is Girl In Space For Kids?

Girl In Space is rated PG (“Clean” on Apple Podcasts), and was intentionally created for entities of all ages to enjoy. However, it does feature sci-fi violence, several adult philosophical and ethical issues, and vocabulary such as “coagulating,” “narcissism,” and “epigenetics”. (Also the word “crap”.)

There are no child characters in the show (aside from flashbacks to when X was younger).

Parents, guardians, and teachers may wish to listen to the first several episodes to get a feel for whether the material is appropriate for children under their care.

Is Girl In Space an Indie Show?

Yes! Girl In Space is an independent (or “indie”) podcast, which means that Sarah writes, directs, edits, and produces the show on her own, not on behalf of any production studio or corporation. This is great because there is no corporate supervision or intervention from people wearing suits (hooray!), but also tough because there is no corporate financial support (boo).

The show is presently funded by donations from listeners like you via Patreon and Ko-fi, merchandise sales, and from any ad revenue (if we have ads running at the time).

Sarah is a proud partner and supporter of Fable & Folly, a coalition of indie audio drama creators who believe that the stories we tell can help others thrive.

Content & Trigger Warnings

There is some slightly disturbing imagery throughout the show (e.g., descriptions of wounds, blood on hands, crawling/buzzing insects) as well as sci-fi gun violence. Individual content warnings are listed in the show notes for each episode.

Launch & Upcoming Seasons

The Girl In Space podcast first launched in September 2017, and ran for 13 episodes through August 2019.

As of June 2024, Season 2 is in the works! Sarah is just a horrifyingly slow writer (and may or may not be on the 7th full rewrite of the season). (help me)

During active seasons, new episodes release on a biweekly (every-other-week) basis, and Patrons on Patreon get early access to new episodes! 🤩

If you’d like to be notified when Season 2 is available, simply subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast app, or sign up to be notified via newsletter. Or stalk my progress using this handy progress tracker.
